Hey everyone!
Welcome to another post on Little Notes by K!
Since this is my first week running a blog I thought I would do two posts as the first was a sort of introductory (or rant) about what has been happening in my life!
With all that is going on in the media with Chappell Roan I thought it might be important to discuss how women are perceived in the media. If you did not know, Chappell Roan (real name Kayleigh Rose Amstutz) is an American singer songwriter who rose to fame in the last few years. She is most commonly known for her song ‘Pink Pony Club’ which was claimed by many of the younger generation. She has generated a lot of (unnecessary) controversy in the media due to setting boundaries with her fans and media outlets.
Ex Arsenal football Jorginho Frello posted on instagram outting Chappell Roan for reportedly sending her security over to his daughter after she walked past Chappell Roan to see if it was her. The security then shouted at both his wife and daughter for breaching boundaries set in place by Chappell. The singer responded on instagram and said security did not do this because she told him to, and it was not even her personal security.
The main issue with all this controversy is that many women in this industry are targets of these smear campaigns, whatever they do will always be incorrect. Women have to be so careful in everything they do as one slight mishap will result in a ‘witch hunt’. Chappell was followed by photographers in 2024 and when she told them to ‘stop following’ her she was made out to be the villain in the media. Even at the Grammys red carpet in 2024 a photographer told her to ‘shut the f*** up’ in which she replied ‘you shut the f*** up’. The response to this widely recorded spat was major in which many viewers decided she was aggressive and does not deserve the platform because she is seemingly ungrateful. I think in any situation if someone told you to be quiet in this manner you would respond in a similar way, especially in such a high pressure environment where millions are watching. As so rightly put by Jameel Jamil on instagram ‘Women are not supposed to have boundaries ever. We are just supposed to smile’. Chappell Roan is challenging how famous women act which I think is AMAZING. It shows younger girls that not only should they not stand to be spoken to like this, but also to stand up and advocate for themselves. We should not be quiet! I have had many personal experiences where I have felt I should not call out bad behavior in fear of being painted as ‘dramatic’ or ‘emotional’. Now more than ever it is important for all women to call out blatant sexist behaviour, especially those who are in the public eye.
What makes this situation even more infuriating is only this week well known actor Shia LaBeouf was seen screaming ‘f*** off’ at a woman in Rome. I had to google this as I had seen NOTHING in the media. So why is it only when women have ‘meltdowns’ that the media jumps to report it, but when a man who has been arrested for violence is screaming at someone, they are silent? Also, the media outlets which have reported on Shia LaBeouf there is a claim he is mentally unwell, there is no accountability. Yes he may not be of sound mind but also that does not diminish the consequences of his actions.
I think this situation is just another example of how sexism is still set in stone in modern day society. Women are constantly reprimanded for actions which if were done by men, would be laughed off. Men require more accountability and women need more defense, only few famous women have come out and supported Chappell Roan in her actions, when they more than likely experience the same discrimination. It is easier said than done as mentioned, I myself have refrained from reacting to different situations in fear of how I would be judged, but, more famous people like Chappell Roan can challenge these sexist norms to set the right example. Also, before anyone says we should not be promoting violence or aggression, sometimes you have to shout to get your point across!
Thank you for reading, I hope this was an interesting one and if you couldn’t tell I love reading and writing about topics like these! Please let me know what you would like me to write about next and if you have any questions email me!
Until the next little note,
K
